Sink it? Or Think that

Updated: Jun 16, 2023

“Houston, we have a problem on our sink/kitchen!!”

Clogged sinks are complete nightmares. You might notice while ago by “smelling something” in your kitchen or notice water flow is getting slow. That might be “sign of your sink is getting clogged.

First thing you might able to try for “quick fix” is using baking soda and white vinegar, if you have them on your kitchen.

1. Pour a cup of hot water.

2. Pour a cup of baking soda and 1 cup water/ cup vinegar solution.

3. Wait for 10 minutes or so.

4. Pour hot water again to see water flow.

5. If not working, try a few times.

If this method is not working, next thing you can do is try commercial products at stores, like Woolworths, Coles, or even Bunnings.

What I found it worked well for us was “Mr. Muscle Drano Max Gel Drain Cleaner”.

You might notice this product, if I say “men with orange sunglass on orange bottle”.

It is sold around $13.50 for 750 ml bottle, depends on stores. As the instruction says, use ½ bottle, it looks like it can be used two times by one bottle, so I think it is reasonable price for fixing clogged sinks.

How to use this product is very simple as follow:

1. Open cap.

2. Pour half contents of bottle slowly into drain.

3. Wait for 15 to 30 minutes. (The instruction says that, but I recommend to wait about 1 to 2 hours until you can see some water flow into drain.)

4. Run drain with hot water.

Basically it does not require any work at all, but I found if you use the plunger after pour liquid and wait for an hour or so, will help more. (Or maybe you can use the plunger first place!!)

This liquid is fighting to destroy dirt on the water pipe gradually. It will take time depends on how much you have dirt on your water pipe. Just be patient!!

This liquid is also help to clean dirt on sink or drainage, but just be caution you do not keep/wait for long hours, like 6 hours or more. This liquid is very powerful to destroy dirt, but also it can be destroy water pipe or any materials, if it is made by plastic.

After you could fix clogged sink, you might think, “how can I prevent this won’t happened again?”

Great question!!

Here are our recommendation:

· Do not pour grease, cooking oil into sink, especially when it still hot.

· Use the kitchen sink net/strainer.

Grease and cooking oil

They are “the popular item” to make your sink clogged. Particularly if you pour these liquid into your sink when it was hot, it will be solidified after its temperature is down, and it will block water flow. It might be good idea to use kitchen towel to clean these oil/liquid then throw in the bin, instead pour into sink.

Using the kitchen net/strainer

This might sounds obvious solution, but if you can prevent “unnecessary items” going to sinks, there is high chance you won’t get clogged sinks.

The products we recommend are “Hair Trap for bath drain” and “Stainless steel sink strainer” that sold at Daiso Japan. They are store like “Dollar General” in USA or “The Reject Shop” in Australia.

You might find similar products at other store, but the price and quality of Daiso is great!!

You can find quality items from around $4.00!!

All you need is you just put these item on your sink. (“Hair Trap for bath drain” is designed for shower room, but it can be used at kitchen. It is same concept.)

Remember, your sink is not your bin. Be on your mind to take out “waste” when you washing or using your sinks. You might say “I have sink dispenser”, but your sink dispenser won’t eat all your waste.
